In Euchre, four players divided into two partnerships start a hand with five cards, leaving some left over in the "kitty". They must take turns deciding whether the suit showing on the top of the kitty will be accepted as trump. If all players pass, they get to take turns deciding whether to name another suit. Once a player has named trump, the dealer swaps a card from his hand with the card showing, and the play begins.

The player to the left of the dealer leads off. The partnership that named trump must take at least 3 out of 5 tricks in order to score, while the defending partnership must try to stop them so that they can score. Hands are played until a partnership scores 10 points.
